Swayamdeep was founded to empower the handicapped women to find new hope and zest for life again

Many time not having both the leg can lead to a life of complete dependence and indignity. This is especially true for women who have lost the use of their legs due to a disease or an unfortunate incident and are not socially or financially strong. Their sources of livelihood are extremely limited, and they also suffer emotionally for being no less than a liability on the people around them. This grave situation often damages their future prospects and prevents them from leading a life of self-respect.

Swayamdeep was founded to address this critical concern and enable these ladies to find new hope and zest for life again. They are empowered with independence, so that they can live with dignity despite the handicap. Here, they are trained for stitching and tailoring clothes with residential and food facilities. They are also provided with employment opportunities.

“I am Rakhma Gaikwad, both the legs are 100% disabled. I stay in Shirajgaon, Taluka Chalisgaon, District Jalgaon. My financial situation was very poor. My parents work on wages. I had to be carried to school so I learned till 4th standard. I used to be staying at home only.

One day there was a programme for distributing useful material for the disabled. My mother took me there to get a cycle for me. I met Meenakshi Tai there who spoke to me. With tearful eyes, I spoke to her. She understood my expectations and invited me to Swayamdeep when it was established. She told me that, this is your own home. I felt as if I had started to live life from that day onward. I started living happily at Swayamdeep. Considering all my problems, Tai started my training. I could not even speak Marathi. I was scared to speak. Now I feel as if I have come out from darkness to light. I got training in all type of stitching and I am doing it now. In Swayamdeep, Tai sends us for outing every Sunday, People from the society come to meet us with Tai. We have our trips, celebrate festivals. I wanted to live but could not. Meenakshi Tai is our mother. I have to tell my mother what I need, but do not have to tell Tai, she understands. My life was like a trash, Tai gave me my true life at Swayamdeep.
